We can’t see our blind spots. In fact, it’s almost as if we need to hit rock bottom before we see the pain of our errors. Why is that?
Well, we create our own reality. It’s built on a set of beliefs that make sense of the world, which otherwise would be too vast to comprehend.
Rejecting a belief would mean rejecting the very reality we exist in. So we fill in the blanks that otherwise would be contradictory and disorienting.
This creates an aversion to knocking against anything that rattles this flimsy architecture.
But if you look at a child, they bump into things, they make mistakes, and they learn. They discover that something is hot and shouldn’t be touched. And this shapes the way they view the world as they create new beliefs.
Making mistakes allows them to test reality and create new beliefs.
The difference is that grown ups become more fixed and less willing to make mistakes. The solution then, to discover our blind spots, is to rub up against our beliefs by doing new things, making mistakes, and learning.
