anything you look at deeply enough turns into infinity
Attention exercise: when looking at people, look for things you like about them
Buddha was harping on about craving and aversion thousands of years ago. And yet we still don’t quite get it. We naturally gravitate towards pleasurable experiences and sensations and steer away from discomfort. We like to feel good. It drives our desires, creates addiction, and leads to self-sabotaging. In very subtle ways.
Caffeine makes me want to DO Alcohol makes me want to PLAY Tea makes me want to RELAX Cacao makes me want to BE
ask: where am i putting pressure on myself?
Don’t try to change your behaviour. Change how you relate to it. Instead of forcing yourself out of bed, learn to soften the frustrations, the shame, allow it.
every time i fall i fall more in love with you
Find it hard to focus? Start things but never finish? Spend hours mindlessly scrolling? Racing thoughts? You might be living in the 21st century.
For much of my life I was chasing fulfilment, thinking that if I changed careers or moved countries or whatever, I’d find it.
Don’t beat yourself up You’re just dysregulated
i am not ashamed of my words
I can speak up and risk losing someone or stay silent and lose myself
i can’t be happy for someone if i’m in competition with them
I love metaphors that are inspired by nature. They feel so right. And they’re so at odds with modern life. We’ve cut travel time from months to hours. Information from generations to an instant. We praise speediness and convenience. Yet there is so much intelligence in the slowness of nature and its interconnectedness. The aim of autumn is not to get to winter. It just is. I get caught up in my dreams and my goals, impatient to arrive. More and more I’m learning to appreciate where I am. And not just see it as transformation in waiting but as perfect as it is right now.
i sometimes wonder how the ordinary people of nazi germany could overlook the horrors of the holocaust and then i look at all of us turning a blind eye to the climate crisis as if nothing can be done
I think society started to go down hill when we went from saying “good morning!” to just “morning.”
I want to return to old technologies Like books And gathering around a fire Or dancing And music
i was suddenly struck by inspiration last week don’t worry, i survived
If I’m not showing myself, how can I expect to be seen
If you feel unloved? Love.
If you hold onto all your thoughts Waiting for the right time to share them You won’t create space For new ones
If you want to feel what it’s like to be a child again, Try sitting on the floor while everyone else sits on chairs
if you want to know how embedded ai will be in 20 years look in the mirror we don’t see technology any more it becomes daily life a virtual representation of us that we spend so long curating and perfecting
if you want to prove yourself you may succeed but then you’ll have something to lose
I’m craving expansion Is the spiritual way of saying I wanna be rich
I’m turning off the internet You have five minutes to save what you’re doing
it’s not forever but it is for now
I’ve started writing by acknowledging that there’s a part of me that wants to criticize and judge, and ask that it shows up later in the editing process while I allow my inner creative to focus on writing. In this way, I don’t need to exile any part of my experience.
Learn to love washing the dishes because you’ll be doing it your whole life
Looking at myself as an assembly of different parts has been a really important part of my journey. It helps me to make sense of the contradictions within me: the part that feels brave, and the part that feels afraid; the part that longs for connection and the part that runs away.
I had to learn how to love my friends as family. Now I’m learning how to love my family as friends.
I love the idea that perhaps we need to broaden our horizon. We need to see what else is possible for us. Without new information, new experiences, new people and stories, we don’t know what else is possible to create in our lives
My friends are buying houses And I’m still working out How to break an egg Without getting shell in the mix
i scare myself to death
my manifesto: just relax
i sometimes wonder how many times i’ve featured in someone’s therapy session
attachment = i need this to be okay
New laws that would change the game: social media has a health warning every 30 minutes of scrolling Ultra processed food cannot be advertised Private jets are banned National public register of all assets worth over $500K Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook spun off into separate companies Shorting companies is banned Outdoor advertising is banned All products must contain a carbon footprint estimate
If it’s a good idea, it will come back to me I don’t need to write everything down (Except this)
Relationships are a cycle of rupture and repair And so it is with my self
Rich people don’t want immortality. They want youth
Forget about the platitudes. It may not work out. It may not be ok. Just remember the magic words: “I believe in you”
softness is hard
sometimes i think about how sound affects nature the way that cows have the bear the sound of cars by a freeway or trees rattled by construction noise in the city we’re imposing our desensitivity on nature
it’s hard to be resilient and soft open to the world, open hearted, sensitive but at the same time strong and courageous often it’s one or the other to choose both is to dance on the edge of a blade but i know it’s worth the practice
It’s not fun watching the world burn if you’re the only one with a view
The only difference between you and the schizophrenic talking to themselves is that you keep your thoughts inside.
We never expect an animal to thank us yet we still feel love. Whereas with humans, we’ve traded feeling for words
The same is true at a macro level for the world. We believe that the only model that works is consumerist, that we must continue to prioritise growth at all costs, that the destruction of the environment is an inevitable car crash. As Moxie says, if we can create different experiences for people, that will manifest different desires, and the demand for change will be greater.
love will set you free
Then I realised I was just looking for a feeling of aliveness. A feeling of being whole (fulfillment). And for that, I can simply cultivate awareness of my body, feel things more deeply, and appreciate the life I already have.
I heard this in a writing class from a fellow student a few years ago. And it made a nest in my heart Writing is a pilgrimage Except it comes towards you
more men should have sex with men stop taking your frustration out on women get laid and love your fellow man
there’s something symbolic about humanity in the way we complain about the doomscroll but create the content for it
There’s that old saying that you can be surrounded by a group of people and yet feel alone. It’s an interesting phenomenon. We are there and yet it’s like being behind plexiglass. I felt this way for many years. Then I realised I had to show the parts of me I feared would be rejected - otherwise they would forever be unseen and I would never be met.
things i wanted when i was young that don’t exist anymore: 1- briefcase 2- calculator watch
i love surprises i can’t believe some people don’t it surprises me and i love it
This is something I’ve been exploring in recent months after a traumatic experience. I’ve had to rebuild my connection with myself, to trust in myself. I’ve felt unsafe in my body - disassociation is a survival technique. Gradually I’ve reintroduced a feeling of safety through movement, meditation, nature and social connection. As I’ve done so, my intuition has returned. The little voices, the visceral nudges. They’re a blessing.
My regular shop assistant calls me bright eyes. And it may be the cutest thing ever
vote with your career
wake up and say to yourself “i’m here for you” and mean it feel some gratitude for this beautiful body as if you had opened your eyes to your lover
We can get very stuck in our lives. It’s like we’re going round in circles, doing the same things, never able to break free. We have dreams but they seem distant and unrealisable. There doesn’t seem to be a vision that works for us or a feasible path towards it.
We can’t handle discomfort. We’ve taken the seeds out of fruit
we have power over what we confer status to. stop thinking 4x4s are cool
we’re waiting for a sign from the universe but sometimes we must give a sign first
What a helpful little mind flip. I’ve spent so much of my life in pursuit of happiness. Thinking that a new job would fulfil me. Or that a relationship would. It’s an endless seeking outside of me. But the only thing I am lacking is what I am not giving. So the surest way to feel happy is to express it, to send it outwards. To dance, to sing, to write, to compliment someone. The well that I thought was dry turns out to be endless.
What do I have to prove → what do I have to offer?
What if It wasn’t about you
whatever you want to do, you’re already doing it
When we feel bad, we might find ourselves pulling out the smartphone, eating a handful of chocolate, or busying ourselves with work. These behaviours can be totally unconscious and automatic. But if we can learn to stop seeing emotions as binary (good or bad) and instead experience them from a place of loving awareness, they can just be. And we stop being reactive.
You can try to control things Or you can increase your capacity to handle things No one told me That peeling away layers of myself Would feel Like peeling away layers of myself
You don’t feel like yourself because you’re not feeling yourself
Somatic meditation is the tool I’ve found most helpful to explore this, little by little exposing myself to discomfort and being curious about what I find. Just what is it about a feeling that’s so repulsive? Perhaps it’s just the intensity of it? In which case, I can increase my capacity to be with it, just as I can build muscle to lift heavier weights.
