Survival of the fittest

may 2026 · essay

There is a belief that has been woven into our fabric

A story we’ve been told so many times we’ve taken it to be truth

And, as with most beliefs, we don’t even know it’s there…

🥁

Survival of the fittest

🦖

Yes, many of us believe that it’s us against the world

That we must hoard money to provide safety

That only the sharpest mind will defend against suffering

Its an individualistic viewpoint

And to usher in the next era, we must have a more supportive belief

The Dalai Lama proposes:

Survival of the most cooperative

And I feel it to be true

Look at nature and what do you see?

Complex root networks of trees supporting one another

Colonies of ants that work together

Even the longest-living human organisms (corporations) survive based on the cooperation of their workers

As Robin Wall Kimmerer says in Braiding Sweetgrass: “When we rely deeply on other lives, there is urgency to protect them”

So take a look around you

Reflect on everything in your environment

Brought to you by the hands of thousands of others

Across countries

With skills unimaginable to your own

Be thankful for their kindness

And ask what part you can do to return the favour
