Shall we play a game?
my friend and i went for coffee
a lovely little spot, with an outdoor seating area
the sort where green leaves arch over you
and sunlight pierces through the glass ceiling
(although the sun didn’t have much luck making its way through the grey clouds)
we enjoyed looking around, soaking in the ambiance
but patience has its limits
and after ten minutes, our coffees still hadn’t arrived
“shall we play a game?” my friend said
“great idea!” i replied
“rock, paper, scissors?”
“umm…” i said, not quite concealing my disinterest
i pulled out my laptop
“why don’t we write a story together! you know, where i write a line, and you write a line, but we don’t know what the other has written?”
and so we began
slowly at first
the thinking mind interjecting
worrying about it being good, about it making sense
but this soon dropped away
and the fun arrived
(as did our coffees)
i felt it in my heart
that sense of whimsy of years gone by
of excitement about what could be
play time
and as much as i love creating
there’s something extra special about creating with another
an element of chaos
like reverse-building a jenga tower
you don’t know it’s final shape until you step back
and see it
there in its glory
as if it was always meant to be
