Speaking without words
I went to a bachata dance social tonight
My knowledge of bachata is nada
I was intimidated to say the least
So I stuck to the side, lurking in the shadows
And I struck up conversation with Angus
Like the beef, he said
And I thought, gosh that’s great
What a way to meet
I was curious
So my conversation was in flow
What is it you like about dancing?
He said it’s speaking without words
Knowing what they want
How they feel
It’s a language
And when you get fluency
It’s ecstasy
There seemed to be so much intimacy
So I asked him to explain it to me
He said, sensuality is this safe cocoon
You’re held in one another
Organic in flow
And sexuality
Is this pull towards each other
Electricity
You can have sensuality without sexuality
But never the other
I was struck by his enthusiasm
And the states he was describing
I said I spent years thinking meditation was on the mat
But it’s here on the floor
I’d ignored this part of me for so long
I felt vulnerable
To be seen in my flaws
Maybe I couldn’t do it
And then he said dancing is a conversation
And I knew I’d been doing that all along
